Crisis Core (PSP) (FEATURED)

Ok, I took this deal from Amazon's Video Game Deal of the Day. I figured I'd kill 2 birds with one stone, because in the world of finding great deals, the amount of content is never lacking!

I promise, I'll start getting deals from other stores soon, but Amazon has some pretty amazing deals for me to just pass up telling you about! Plus you don't even know about all the cool ways to save money on Amazon yet.

Today, Amazon has Crisis Core for the PSP for only $25.99. Pricegrabber has the next lowest price at $37.95!

Crisis Core is a pretty awesome game. I haven't played through it yet, but I have tried it for a couple hours. It's the prequel to Final Fantasy VII (PSX). So you Final Fantasy fans who haven't picked it up, nows your chance.

Now as for Amazon's Video Game Deal of the Day, everyday, Amazon features a video game, console, or device used in gaming. You might find controllers, component cables, GameCubes, etc, it all depends on the day. The savings all depend on the day, but definitely won't find a place that comes close in price.

Another cool feature is that you can register the deal to work with your mobile phone. You text the word gamedeal to 262966 (AMAZON) and it will return todays game. If you want to buy the game, you can reply with 1! Even when you can't get to a computer, you can still check out the daily deal so you don't miss out!

As usual, I will update the Finding Deals' Amazon Deals store daily, so check it every morning!

Samsung 52" HDTV Plus TiVo HD Box (FEATURED)

Today I have a super deal for all you HD fans out there! Amazon has a special going on where you get a free TiVo TCD652160 HD DVR for every Samsung HDTV you buy. On top of that, they just so happen to have an amazing deal on the 52" Samsung LN52A550 LCD HDTV. After adding both to your cart and going into the checkout, the final price is $1,888.86!! Pricegrabber has the HDTV for $1934.00 and the TiVo for $209.98. If my math is correct, that's a savings of over $255!

Right now, I'm going to apologize if the formating on this post is a little weak. The truth is, this deal is so good, that I had to post it while I was at work, and they have a site blocker which blocks most advertising, so I can't even see what the final post looks like.

Anyways, the best way to get this deal is by clicking on the TV link, looking at the price Amazon won't show and clicking on the Green icon for extra savings. You can then quickly add both items to your cart with the click of one button (Scrolling down on that page also works). You can add them separately from here, but you have to make sure you add the TiVo from Amazon and not the less expensive vendor.

I've also added the deal to the Amazon store, so you might want to throw the remote in there while your at it. You can program the remote to work with the TiVo and you won't have to have a bunch of lousy remotes laying around!

update: it looks like the TV is now $1899.99. But you still get the TiVo for free!

Mint.com

So this post isn't so much how to save money when making purchases, it's on how to save money by realizing just how much your wasting every month!

Every fiscally responsible person has some sort of budget set up for themselves. They usually balance their checkbooks weekly, save all their receipts and check their credit card balances throughout the day to make sure they aren't blowing their hard earned dollars away.

I am not one of these people. I buy things on a whim, spending as much as my credit card allows in a given month (but I do pay it all back). You see, I might be a college student, but I'm not broke by any means. I work part-time during the school year to pay for everyday bills and work about 60 hours during the summers and my winter break to pay for school and have extra spending money during the 8 months money is a bit tighter. The thing is, if I don't watch how I spend my money, then I will be broke and sad!

I am however, a techno-savvy consumer. I have all my accounts available for me online, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The only problem is, I have accounts with like 5 or 6 different places and it's quite the bother to keep track of them all, especially when it comes to making a payment on time. In comes Mint.com to save me from getting lost in a whole lot of tiny transactions.

After signing up at Mint.com, you can add almost all of you bank accounts, credit card accounts, and now even retirement savings accounts and portfolios! The only thing missing is loans, but when you're a student with $100,000 in loans, that'll definitely make you feel a little more depressed every time you check your spending.

Anyways, it's really easy to add your accounts. You simple go to the "My Accounts" section, click on the card that says "Click to add any of your accounts" and now the fun begins. You find the your bank or creditor in their database. You give them your sign in info (it's ok, they won't do anything like steal your money!). You do this with all your accounts. Mint.com will then sign into your accounts and take all your information (current balance, bill due dates, transactions, etc) and bunch it all together for you.

You can now go through your transactions and rename them and categorize them. You can set up rules so that the names always match up. You can add labels to transactions to quickly find things (I mark all my shipping labels for goozex with a goozex label, then I know how much I spend on shipping there). You can quickly search for transaction names, labels, categories, etc and it will list whatever you are looking for quickly!

Now the fun part, creating a budget. If you click on the Overview tab, you will be shown TONS of information. You will see your account balances on the left. You will also see some reminders and alerts towards the top (bills due, overspending on your budget, etc). And below that is the budget graph. Here you can edit how much you want to spend in different categories every month. My advice, put something a little lower then your current spending and try to stay within your budget. It's like you have your mom telling you you're spending too much money and you slow down the spending!

Additionally, you can check out your spending in different categories in a fancy Pie chart in the Trends tab. This can be over the past month, 3 months, or all time. If you click on a slice of the pie, it'll detail your spending (OMG, I spent $70 at my favorite sub shop since I came home for the summer, this needs to stop!). Below the pie chart, you can check your spending compared to other people in your city.

Oh and now for the money saving portion of todays site! You know how a bunch of creditors are rewarding their customers by giving them cashback. Well in order to Mint.com to stay up and running for you, they need to generate revenue by telling you about different credit card options that will better suit your monthly spending or by which banks will give you more money for the money you keep with them. In the end, you sign up with a new bank, earn a bunch of money extra in a month (I switched checking accounts and now make about $30 more a month) and Mint.com makes money too. Everyone wins, including the banks because they now have a new customer!

How you might wonder what makes this place better then using a program like Microsoft Money or Quicken. The truth is, there isn't much of a difference. I just like the fact that I can access my entire "portfolio" from any computer and oh yeah, it's FREE! So check it out, even if its just to see if there are better banks offering more then what you currently have. Soon after, you'll fall in love with it and use it to make sure you're not spending too much on the good deals you find here!

Traffic... MORE MORE MORE!

Children, it's time to gather round and listen to a little story. There was this kid, who we'll call Joe. Joe started up a blog to help save people money, LOTS of money. The thing is, Joe's blog wasn't getting any readers and Joe was really sad that he couldn't share his knowledge on to to save lots of money.

Ok, Joe is really me, and Joe's blog is really this one. I just realized that posting deals is somewhat useless right now since I'm the only one visiting this page.

From past blogging experience, I started with BlogExplosion.com. The nice thing about Blogexplosion.com is you can get one person to visit your blog for every 2 blogs you visit. In the past, I've found many readers through this method and it gives me something to do when I'm at work.

While using Blogexplosion.com, I came across a site called Web Money. Web Money is a blog resource guide in which bloggers can use to make money, no ways!

Alright, just because I've been reading over a blog that teaches bloggers how to make money, doesn't mean this site will be plastered full of ads and pop ups which bog your computer down to a point where you are weeping. The truth is, money can't be made on the internet without traffic and this blog author (Blake) takes the time to give different methods of generating more traffic. This could be through sites similar to Blogexplosion.com or through paying for buying advertising.

So if you're one of my first visitors checking out this site and your looking to find some more readers for your blog, go check out Web Money, it's definitely a resource you'll want to bookmark or throw into your RSS reader!

Blu-Ray Movies 50% off! (FEATURED)

Amazon is notorious for having some of the best HD Movie sales around. Back when HD DVD was alive, you could find Buy 1 Get 1 (BOGO for short) deals on both formats almost monthly. Needless to say, my Blu-ray collection grew pretty quickly back then.

Now you might find a B2G1 (Three for the Price of Two) sale every other month. As it turns out though, Amazon wanted to be be super nice at the end of May and have a bunch of Blu-ray movies marked down 50%! I listed all the movies that are 50% off in the Finding Deals' Amazon Deals store front.

If you are looking for other good Blu-ray deals, you can check out the rest of their selection which are marked down more then 40% off by going here. They have over 110 Blu-rays on sale right now, so go check it out!A

Finding Deals' Amazon Deals

I mentioned in my first post I would document how I was going to try to make a little bit of money on this site. At this point, I could litter my blog full of Adsense ads and other easy to use ad tools, but since this site costs me nothing but time as of now, I want to keep the revenue earning portions of the site as subtle as possible.

So welcome to Finding Deals' Amazon Deals! At this point, I'm going to fill the store up with a bunch of sale priced items and update the store daily with new deals I find. So in a way, it's just another good place to look for good deals besides the places I'm sharing with you. Eventually, I'll integrate it into the site better, but until then, it will just be displayed via the Amazon site with a link back to here.

I did also mention before that I would start having posts with good deals I've found. I'll combine that post with this one since they somewhat go hand in hand.

Today I'm featuring the Logitech Harmony 550 Universal Remote. This remote retails for $130 and the lowest price on Pricegrabber.com is over $70!

I have the Xbox 360 version of this remote and paid way more then this for a used one! You can connect the remote into your computer, add all your IR devices (TV, Receiver, Xbox 360, PStwo, etc) and then program different activities. For example, you can have an activity called "Watch TV". When you choose this option, it will turn on any device needed to Watch TV as well as switch the inputs on each device. If you control the volume with your Receiver the volume buttons on the remote will control the receiver. If you have a cable box that changes the channel, then the numbers and the Channel Up and Channel Down buttons will control the set top box. It's a pretty awesome piece of technology, especially if you have a nice home theater. Heck, if you have your lights on an IR switch, you can turn on and off your lights or even dim them for movies and what not. Plus whatever button you might be missing on the remote, you can add to the LCD screen which displays 4 different functions at a time and can store multiple pages of them!

Slickdeals.net

Hey, remember yesterday when I told you all about Fat Wallet and their forums? Well guess what, I have another awesome web community filled with the newest and best deals across the internet. Slickdeals.net is a site I visit everyday, throughout the day because sometimes the best deals don't last very long, especially when the masses start sharing their deals.

When you first access Slickdeals.net, you are greeted with a list of featured deals that is updated throughout the day. These deals and are the latest and greatest of all the posted deals on the site. The nice thing is, dead deals will lose it's boldface title and will be labeled expired red. This definitely makes finding good deals easier and faster. Once you click on a headline, the deal will be expanded and you can learn where and how you can get the product at a bargain price! To add to the convenience factor, an RSS feed is available so you can be one of the first people to jump on a deal.

On the top of the page is a ribbon bar with links to the homepage, a coupon database, the forums, research tools, and a FAQ. Lets start off with the FAQ. The Slickdeals.net FAQ will explain anything and everything on the site. It teaches users how to use every feature to its fullest extent and is your best friend when you don't know how to do something or need help with something obscure. Users can quickly search the FAQ using the search tool which will give users the most relevant answers.

Hovering over the Coupon link, a drop down box will allow you to sort all the coupons by alphabetical ranges, the newest coupons, ones expiring soon, and my merchandise (apparel, tech, etc.). If you click on the coupon link, a list of all the newest coupons will be displayed. Whenever you buy something online, it is best to search Slickdeals.net for the shop you are buying from to see if you can save yourself a few dollars in a few seconds time.

Similar to the Coupons link, the list of forum topics will be shown when your mouse hovers over the Forums link. This is useful, but I usually just click on the link to show the forums. The categories "The Deals" and "Deal Talk" are by far the best places to look for deals on the site. Each of the forums are pretty self explanatory and I'll leave you to discover.

When looking at the forum topics, you will notice many different icons. Most of are pretty self explanatory, like the paper clip means there is an attachment. A W stands for a Wiki-post. These wiki-posts are created by the system and shown as the second post in the thread. All users can edit it and quickly add notes in which the original poster left out (links, telephone numbers, lists, etc). You will also see icons on the left side of the topics which categorize the deal. You can quickly find similar deals by clicking on the icon and showing all the deals in the category.

Additionally, Slickdeals.net has some features that only registered users can use. You might have noticed an icon that looked like a circle with a dash or a minus sign in the middle. This allows you to ignore the topic. This is useful when a deal is dead or when you just don't care for the product that is being offered. It keeps the forums less cluttered and easier to find the recently added deals. Additionally, you can create your own sticky topics by going into the topic, clicking on the Thread Tools drop down and choosing "Stick the thread to the top". Pretty useful eh?

Now for the Research Tools, a feature I need to use a bit more often! Here you will find a Price Search tool, Store Ratings, Amazon Fillers, and Product Reviews. The Product Reviews just takes you to a forum dedicated to users posting their own reviews for anything they have bought in the past.

The Price Search tool is powered by Price Grabber, so the format may look familiar to you bargain hunters out there. All you do is search for an item you are looking for and enter your zip code. In return you will be shown multiple vendors selling the product and who will have the lowest final cost after shipping and taxes. This portion is pretty much useless since I know ya'll have taken my advice and started using Cashback Sites!

Store Rating are provided by a site called resellerrattings.com. Here you can get a good idea if a small vendor you've never heard of is reliable when you find a deal that is too good to be true. Using this tool will save you from handing over your credit card information to someone who will sell your identity to the highest bidder. You can quickly search for the store name and read reviews and get other consumer feedback based on the store's past transactions.

Now I saved my favorite Research Tool for last, the Amazon Filler Tool! Amazon offers free shipping on almost all purchases over $25. The problem is, they like to price things like $14.95 or $9.99. It's even more of a pain when you're only a few cents short of getting to that $25 mark and now your stuck with paying $6 for shipping or finding something to add to your cart. Well lucky for you, Slickdeals.net users have taken the time to create a database full of cheap items so you save the most amount of money. All you do is input the amount your short of getting free shipping and you will be shown every item that you can add to your cart that will qualify you for free shipping!

Cashback Websites

A lot of websites offer affiliate and referral programs that will give a certain percentage of their sales to their "advertisers". Well someone along the line thought figured it would be a great idea to take all these programs and create a new type of online shopping experience, the cashback website.

What makes these sites awesome is instead of them keeping all their affiliate revenue for themselves, they share with you, the person who is actually spending your money! You can earn anything from 1% up to over 30% off, all just for shopping online like you normally would.

These sites are popping up all over the internet and offering different stores and discounts. Some sites are better then others when it comes to offerings, cashback, payment methods and referral programs.

Today, I'm going to break down 3 of my favorite cashback sites: Jellyfish (now Live Search Cashback), Ebates, and Fat Wallet.

JELLYFISH
Alright, I'm refusing to call this by it's new name (Live Search cashback). I like what Microsoft has done with Jellyfish since they bought it, however, they moved the cashback portion to a different site and renamed it, HOW RUDE!

Jellyfish offers the most payment methods out of the 3. You can be paid via PayPal, Direct Deposit, or by receiving a check in the mail. Additionally, you can receive payment after your account reaches $5, you can request this payment at anytime. It will take about 14 days before you see the money in your account or the check in your hand.

Your cashback funds will be pending for up to 60 days which can be annoying, but all the sites have this delay period to protect themselves against people making returns and them losing money.

Jellyfish offers a social shopping service called Smack Shopping. This is similar to a reverse auction, where the price drops slowly (it will drop more quickly during different shows) until all the items are purchased. You can chat with other Jellyfish users and play games like SmackPot and Outwit the Smack, where you are awarded coins and guru points. Coins can be used to purchase Jellyfish merchandise and get extra cashback. Guru Points will get you more coins when you reach certain Milestones, which are shown below:

Additionally, you will receive 500 more coins for ever 50 guru points after the 100 marker (150, 200, 250, etc). Jellyfish is also so kind as to give you an even bigger bonus of 1000 coins when you reach 500 guru points and 10000 coins when you reach 1000 guru points!

As for the games, Smackpot is simple, for the first few minutes of each item, you are allowed to bet up to 10 of your coins on the percentage off range the item will sell at. The less people that guess a certain range, the bigger your coin payout can be. Outwit the Smack is even easier; after each item, you register to play. Outwit is similar to playing Trivia, except the questions are silly and the answers are even more bizarre. Your goal is to guess the one that the least number of people will pick. For Outwitting the Smack, you are awarded 1 Guru Point. They will also pick one random person in the audience to play and have a chance to win 3 Guru Points and the Jackpot, which starts at 1000 coins and goes up by 1000 more for every round there isn't a winner!

There are a few other games, like the Smack Wheel, but they are played at various times throughout the day. Once you sign up and start playing, you'll learn to love the community, just as much as the money you'll save!

EBATES
Ebates is nicer in the sense that your cashback will be credited in as little as 48 hours, but can take up to 30 days. However, unlike Jellyfish and Fat Wallet, you cannot request payment at anytime you reach the required minimum balance. Instead, Ebates pays you every quarter (January 1 - March 31 is quarter 1 and you get paid on May 15). If you don't make the minimum balance of $5, they will transfer your funds into the next quarter, so you don't have to worry about losing that hard earned cash. Payments can be made via PayPal or by check, no direct deposit here.

They also have a store they feature daily where they give you double the cashback, meaning you can save up to 50% off at certain stores. You can search by store or by the item you are looking for and it will tell you where it will be cheapest to buy.

Like Jellyfish, Ebates offers a whole slew of other services. It's the only cashback program of the 3 I'm discussing that has a referral program. For every person you refer that signs up and makes a purchase, you and the other person receives $5! Get free money for helping others save money, I like it!

Additionally, they offer coupons for different stores, online or local, which you can browse and save for use later. These coupons can be used on top of your cashback that you receive, which can save you hundreds of dollars in a year easily!

FAT WALLET
Fat Wallet and Ebates are pretty similar. They both offer the cashback and the coupons for a bunch of online retailers. It will also allow you to compare prices between different vendors so you save more.

The one problem I do have with Fat Wallet is the time it takes for the cashback to put added to your account. It can take anywhere from 91 days, up to 120 days. I'm sorry, but 4 months to get some money back kinda sucks, especially when other places will do it in as little as a month! Also, they have a $10 minimum balance before you can get your money back. However, like Jellyfish, you can get your money back at anytime after you reach the required minimum balance.

There is one thing I do like about Fat Wallet more then the other 2 places, their forums! Throughout the day, Fat Wallet users will list deals they have found online or in store. You can do a quick search for something your looking for and see if anyone has found a good deal recently. If you want to save some extra dough, you'll combine these deals with cashback programs from other sites!

Goozex

Being a 21 year old that came from a household with all the latest video game consoles, gaming consumes a good portion of my free time. Any gamer knows full well that the hobby isn't cheap, you have to first go out and buy a gaming console, only to later invest in controllers, memory cards, and GAMES!

This generation of gaming is the most expensive by far. New games tend to sell for $50 (I haven't paid $60 for a single PS3 game yet, but we'll save that for another day!) and can be as pricey as a few hundred dollars for a game like Rock Band!

To lower the costs associated with gaming, many will trade games at stores like Gamestop who will give you $15 for a game that they will later resell used for $45. You could always go the route of ebay and pay $8 in fees. Honestly, I hate giving away my money, mostly because I don't have a lot to give away. In comes Goozex, an online game trading site.

SIGNING UP FOR GOOZEX
Goozex offers free-market determined prices and charges users only $1 for each game received. Additionally, they give you 100 points and 1 trade credit ($6 value) when you sign up and an extra 100 points and trade credit after your first positive trade (Military Personnel receive 2 trade credits if they use their .mil email address to sign up). When was the last time Gamespot gave you $12 extra for trading in an old game?

Additionally, they offer a referral program so you receive an extra 100 points and trade credit for every friend that makes a positive trade. You can either have your friend give your username during signup or you can give them a personalized sign up link, which looks something like this:

http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/join.asp?idr=53005191170

HOW IT WORKS
Now here's the fun part of Goozex, giving and getting! Your first job is to create a list of all the games you are willing to trade. Goozex allows you to trade games on any console and handheld from this generation as well as a few generations back. Goozex allows you to trade games from:

  • Xbox 360
  • Xbox
  • Playstation 3
  • Playstation 2
  • Playstation
  • PSP
  • Wii
  • GameCube
  • Nindendo DS
  • Game Boy Advance
  • Dreamcast
  • PC
  • Mac
You can quickly create a list of games you have buy using the search feature and clicking the "HAVE" icon underneath the cover art in the search results. You can even add games to your library and put them on hold if just not ready to part with them. This will keep you in the queue, but it will skip you automatically when it's your turn. After listing your library, you just site back and wait for the system to find someone who wants the game. Once you have been matched, you will receive an email and you have the choice to send the game or put the game back into the queue (now why would you want to do that!).

After accepting the trade, you will package up the game in a padded envelope and ship the game to the user. Shipping costs anywhere from $0.75 up to $2.50. You should probably add tracking, just for your own protection as well. Once the person receives the game, they will test it and leave feedback. More on that later!

Now I know you're all wondering, when do I get games! Well getting is even easier then giving. You will create a list of requests by searching for games and clicking the WANT icon underneath the cover art. You will be added to the queue and the system will find you a match. Once you are matched, the points and the trade credit will be deducted from your account and the other user will send the game. Simple enough? I thought so!

Once the game arrives, you will check out the case and manual, along with testing out the game, and then you will leave feedback. Voila, you just received your first game!

POINTS AND TRADE CREDITS
Points are Goozex currency. Games range from 100 points up to 1000 points. Obviously since the price is determined by a free market, games in which the supply is high and demand is low will only be 100 points and games that have a high demand are 1000 points. They go by 50 point intervals. Points are more or less switched between users, so if you request a game that is 300 points, your account will go down by 300 points and their account will go up by 300 points. Take that Gamespot!

You also need to have a trade credit if you want to receive a game. Unlike points, these aren't switched between users. Once your request has been matched, the point is taken away from you and given to the website as a form of payment. Simple enough for ya?

FEEDBACK
Similar to ebay, Goozex has a feedback system. Feeback more or less just allows you to send and receive more games at one time. After you reach 50 feedback (you receive 10 feedback for every positive trade), the points you earn from sending games will be added to your account after accepting a trade, rather then after you receive positive feedback. The following table shows how many active trades you can have at each user level:

TIPS AND TRICKS
I've been a Goozex user for the past couple months and I've learned so many things to save some money since. I always like saving money and I've learned 2 tricks to save a few bucks here and there.

First trick, reuse the envelopes you receive! Carefully open the envelope and remove the old label. While the sticky seal won't work, tape does! I've paid as little as $0.30 for a padded envelope and up to $1.00 each. The cost of shipping supplies can add up.

Additionally, you should print your postage online with PayPal. By using PayPal, you only pay $0.18 for tracking instead of $0.80 the post office wants! Most games are about 5 oz, so I suggest using that as your base weight when printing postage if you don't have a scale. Afterwards, take it to the post office and add extra postage if needed!

You can save some more money buy buying trade credits and points in "bulk". You can save anywhere from 5% to 13% depending on how much you are spending.

Another quick tip, play through a game once and quickly trade it, even if you didn't beat the game 100%. You get more points and when the points drop, you can request it again. Every 100 points the game drops, you save $5 (ok after shipping on the $1 fee, it's more like $2, but that's $2 saved!).

You should also try to be active in the community. They are constantly having contests in which the winners are awarded free trade credits and points. Not only do you get to play games with cool people from all over the North America, but you have a chance to win something too!

Last but not least, you should edit your preferences. Goozex defaults your trading region to the US only. You might want to add Canada and Bermuda to your list of places to send. It might cost a couple cents more and tracking isn't an option, but our friends in Canada and Bermuda like playing games just as much as we do and you will be able to get rid of and receive more games a bit more quickly. Also, you might want to change your default shipping options to full package since most people don't send their games disc only and rarely want games that are disc only (unless it's GBA).
